It has been a long wait, but Tesla yesterday officially announced a program for owners of older Teslas to upgrade from MCU1 (Media Control Unit) to MCU2.
The infotainment upgrade will gives owners of pre-March 2018 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles access to a number of new features that will make their cars feel like new again. The upgrade, which will cost $2,500 USD, is currently only available in the US, with “other regions to be announced” at a later date.
Since this upgrade program is not available in Canada, no pricing has been announced yet. When it does finally come north of the border, we expect it to be around $3,300 CAD.
There is one pretty big drawback to the MCU upgrade which some owners feel is a dealbreaker. The new MCU will remove the ability to access any AM or FM radio, as well as Sirius XM. You will however still be able to access internet radio and music streaming.
One the plus side, the upgrade will give owners access to a lot more features that they have missed out on until now. That includes some of the new arcade games like Beach Buggy Racing 2, access to Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and other streaming services, Caraoke, and Trax.
This MCU upgrade is not the same as the HW3 Full Self-Driving (FSD) Computer upgrade, which you will still need to pay separately for by purchasing the FSD package. Priority for the upgrade will be based on the configuration of your vehicle as per the table from Tesla below.
If you own a Tesla with MCU1 and have purchased the FSD package, you will receive early access to the MCU upgrade program, and get the FSD computer upgrade at the same appointment.
