Tesla is shifting to its vision-based Autopilot system for the Model 3 and Model Y in Europe and Middle Eastern markets.
According to ‘Transitioning to Tesla Vision’ support page for the United Kingdom (UK), cars delivered from April 2022 onwards will be without radar. (h/t:Â @tesla_adri)
“Beginning with deliveries in April 2022, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for the European and Middle Eastern markets will no longer be equipped with radar. Instead, these will be the first Tesla vehicles to rely on camera vision and neural net processing to deliver Autopilot, Full-Self Driving capabilities and certain active safety features.”
While most drivers won’t notice the difference in their day to day driving, the switchover will have a particularly big impact on customers in Germany.
With Tesla Vision, Autopilot is limited to just 130km/h (80mph), a particularly slow speed for the country’s Autobahn.
The only other limitation without radar is an increased following distance while on Autopilot.
Tesla says all standard features are available on vehicles equipped with Tesla Vision.
Tesla first transitioned to the camera-based system in North America in May 2021, at which time it only included the Model 3 and Model Y.
It stayed that way until just recently when in February the automaker also removed radar from the flagship Model S and Model X.
