Tesla Model Y reservation holder gets VIN assignment from Giga Texas: Report

It looks like the first Tesla Model Y deliveries from Giga Texas could be just around the corner.

This afternoon a Model Y Performance reservation holder was assigned a VIN for his upcoming delivery, and a delivery date of between February 25 and March 1.

While that might not sound unusual, the 11th digit of the VIN reportedly contained the letter ‘A’, indicating the car was built in Austin at Giga Texas.

UPDATE 8:38pm PST: Despite repeated attempts to get a screenshot of the actual VIN, the Twitter user has not responded, so we are going to have to file this one under the false category until such time as the VIN is revealed.

Cars built at Fremont contain the letter ‘F’ in the 11th position, which is used to indicate the ‘Plant of Manufacture.’ These changes were noted in a document from the NHTSA last year.

While it is exciting that the first known VIN from Giga Texas has been assigned, this development should be taken with caution for now.

The main reason is that the customer has not shared a screenshot of the entire VIN, just the first few digits showing it is a Model Y.

There are a couple of factors in his favour however.

The first is that he is located in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Elon Musk has said Giga Texas will supply the eastern two-thirds of the United States (and presumably Canada).

The other is that Tesla said deliveries from Giga Texas would begin before the end of March, putting his delivery window just slightly ahead of schedule.

We will update this article if and when the full VIN is shared.
