The EPA ratings have finally come in for the Rivian R1T and R1S. The R1T pickup comes in with a range of 314 miles (505km). At the same time, the R1S electric SUV comes in at 316 miles (508km).
Although these numbers seem impressive, one must remember that this range is with the smaller Rivian battery pack. Small is relative as the battery pack is 135-kWh, which is the largest on the current market.
Those numbers will also be cut in half when towing, according to Rivian’s website which says to expect 50% range loss while hauling a trailer.
Rivian plans to release the next version of their battery packs with an even larger capacity.
The big question for Rivian and those in the industry is how these range figures compare to its rivals. Neither the Tesla Cybertruck nor Ford F-150 Lightning has been tested yet, and their range is still a bit of a mystery.
As per Ford spokespeople, the company is aiming for a 300-mile range. Other trucks like the Bollinger B2 and Canoo pickup have yet to test.
However, Rivian appears set to beat them all to the market and set the benchmark for other trucks to meet.
It will be interesting to see where Ford, Tesla, Bollinger and Canoo end up in the race to the first great EV pickup.
