Ontario’s Waterloo Region to receive 46 new EV chargers

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Ontario’s Waterloo Region will soon have more places to plug in and charge their vehicles.

In an press release earlier today the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth announced a $230,000 investment to install 46 new EV chargers across the Waterloo Region municipalities.

Along with the investment through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, another $580,000 is being contributed by the Region of Waterloo, the Townships of Wellesley and Wilmot, and the Cities of Waterloo, Cambridge and Kitchener, bringing the total project cost to $810,000.

Construction will begin soon and all chargers will be available for public use by January 31, 2022.

The Government of Canada has already invested over $1 billion to increase EV adoption and expand the country’s charging network. There are currently more than 6,000 publicly accessible charging stations across Canada, compared with approximately 12,000 gas stations.

Earlier this year it was also announced the two universities in Waterloo, The University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, would also be adding 20 new EV chargers this summer.
