A board member have revealed Volkswagen (VW) will stop selling cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) and go all-electric in Europe by 2035.
The comments were made by Klaus Zellmer, a member of the board for sales and marketing at VWs passenger cars brand during an interview with Münchner Merkur newspaper on Sunday. The German automaker will target to be all-electric in Europe between 2033 and 2035.
“In Europe, we’ll be getting out of the combustion engine vehicle business between 2033 and 2035,” he said (via Reuters).
No specific timeline for North America and China were given, but Zellmer said that will happen “a little later” after the transition in Europe.
It will take longer in other parts of the world like Africa and South America “due to the lack of political framework conditions and infrastructure.” Zellmer did say the automaker plans to be carbon neutral by 2050.
The news of a specific date for the end of ICE sales, at least in Europe, comes on the heels of sister brand Audi announcing last week they plan to stop producing ICE vehicles by 2033.
