Waymo pushes for Alberta robotaxi approval as Canadian expansion plans grow

Waymo is pushing to bring its driverless robotaxi service to Alberta, expanding its Canadian ambitions beyond its planned Toronto launch in 2028.

Waymo has been lobbying the Alberta government and confirmed it is contacting officials across Canada as part of its global expansion (via CityNews).

The City of Calgary confirmed Waymo has shown interest in running its service in the city, although several regulatory hurdles remain before passengers could book a driverless ride.

Following provincial approval, Calgary said it may still need to amend its Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw to accommodate Waymo’s service. Meanwhile, Edmonton confirmed the company has not contacted its Vehicle for Hire team.

Alberta Transportation declined to discuss specific proposals under review, saying applications are considered individually. The province is also examining how other jurisdictions regulate autonomous vehicles.

The Alberta push comes as Waymo has already started testing in Toronto, where the company plans to launch its commercial robotaxi service in 2028.
