Tesla owners who have been waiting years for their cars to drive themselves finally have a target date, though it comes with a big catch.
On its Q3 2026 earnings call, Tesla said it hopes to start turning on unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in the first customer-owned vehicles around the second quarter of 2027, with the software arriving as part of FSD V15.
The shareholder question
The timeline came in response to one of the questions shareholders submitted ahead of the call: “When can we anticipate FSD unsupervised in customer cars?”
Answering for Tesla, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy explained that Cybercab and the Model Y already share one software stack, which customers will get with the V15 release.
“We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles to be part of the robotaxi fleet,” Elluswamy said.
Only inside Robotaxi zones
That last part is the catch. According to Elluswamy, the only extra requirement is making sure customer cars can be part of the geofences and fleet management Tesla already uses for its own driverless vehicles.
In other words, the first step isn’t an owner’s car driving itself anywhere, but owner cars joining Tesla’s managed Robotaxi network in the areas where it already operates, which today are all in the U.S.
Interestingly, the call came on the same day new code in Tesla’s Robotaxi app pointed to owners being able to enrol their personal cars in the network.
As always, Tesla’s FSD timelines should be taken with a grain of salt after a long history of missing its own deadlines. In October 2016, Musk said a Tesla would drive itself across the U.S., from Los Angeles to New York, with no one touching the controls by the end of 2017, a demo that never happened.
At Tesla’s 2019 autonomy event, he went further, saying “next year, for sure, we will have over a million robotaxis on the road.”
More recently, Tesla said in October 2024 that it expected to roll out unsupervised FSD to Model 3 and Model Y owners in California and Texas in 2025. That didn’t happen either.
