Waymo is expanding its European operations, announcing plans to begin testing its autonomous vehicles in Madrid, Spain, ahead of a commercial robotaxi launch in 2027.
The Alphabet-owned company will bring its electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to the Madrid region in the coming days. However, the vehicles won’t immediately operate without drivers, as Waymo plans to gradually introduce its autonomous technology through several testing phases.
Testing will initially take place manually before transitioning to autonomous testing with trained safety drivers behind the wheel. Waymo says it is not yet offering commercial rides.
The announcement follows Waymo’s recent expansion into Germany, where Munich became its first planned market in the European Union. The company is also preparing to launch operations in London, giving it a growing presence across Europe.
Waymo has also been looking to expand into Canada, recently confirming plans to bring its robotaxi service to Toronto in 2028.
Waymo says testing could take place around the clock, seven days a week, under Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) guidelines.
Waymo in heading to Spain having completed more than 20 million trips and over 400 million kilometres of fully autonomous driving.
