Waymo may be driving Oktoberfest patrons’ home in 2027 if everything goes according to plan for the robotaxi company.
Waymo confirmed the rumours that they plan to roll out robotaxi rides in Munich, Germany, in 2027. Phased testing will start over the next few weeks in Munich, with public testing starting later this year.
The phased testing will allow Waymo to train its autonomous specialists, adapt its software to the German market and build out high-definition maps. The company will be running in the following districts in Munich: Altstadt-Lehel, Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt, Maxvorstadt, Schwabing-West, Au-Haidhausen, Sendling-Westpark, Schwanthalerhöhe, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Moosach, Schwabing-Freimann, Bogenhausen, Berg am Laim, Ramersdorf-Perlach, Untergiesing-Harlaching, Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln, Hadern and Laim
The company did not confirm which vehicles will be making the move to Germany. However, we can assume the company will start by using its fleet of Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, as it did in its London launch.
Waymo is looking to maintain its dominance in the robotaxi landscape and is rapidly expanding its services to stay ahead of other entrants. This year, the company announced expansions to San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver. These expansion plans aren’t limited to the States; Waymo has also announced robotaxi services for London and Tokyo.
