Tesla has finally started accepting Cybertrucks as trade-ins in Canada, reversing a policy that previously left owners unable to trade their electric pickups toward a new Tesla.
However, early trade-in offers suggest owners may not be getting the values they were hoping for.
Back in August we reported on a Canadian Cybertruck owner who was told Tesla would not accept his Cybertruck as a trade-in, despite being available in Canada for two years. At the time, the owner was approaching the end of his basic vehicle warranty and wanted to upgrade to a new Cybertruck.
That restriction now appears to have been lifted, with multiple Canadian owners sharing online they have been able to successfully receive trade-in estimates from Tesla.
In the Cybertruck Canada Facebook group, one owner shared a Tesla trade-in estimate of $86,600 for a 2024 Cybertruck Foundation Series AWD with 38,310 km on the odometer.
Another Canadian owner, @darewecan, shared on X that he received an offer of just $88,400 for his Foundation Series Cybertruck, significantly below what other dealerships were willing to pay.
“I currently have one dealer offering me $103K for the truck as they sell them for $117-119K & I tested a wholesale auction, Open Lane, through a local Ford dealership a few months ago and the winning bid at wholesale was $104,700.”
That puts Tesla’s offer around $15,000 below the competing dealership offer and the winning wholesale auction bid.
The offers are also well below the current starting price for the Cybertruck in Canada, which currently sits at $139,990 for the Premium AWD variant and an eye-watering $167,990 for the Cyberbeast. Although it is worth noting these prices are inflated due to the current tariff situation with the U.S.
Tesla has never explained why it previously declined Cybertruck trade-ins, although we suspected the price disparity with tariffs in place on new vehicles may have played a role. It is also unclear why the current trade-in estimates appear relatively low, but the change is nonetheless welcome news for Canadian owners.
However, based on these early examples, owners looking to upgrade may still be better off shopping their Cybertruck around rather than accept Tesla’s offer.
Another low trade in offer from Tesla Canada – this time for my Foundation Series Cybertruck for $88,400. I currently have one dealer offering me $103K for the truck as they sell them for $117-119K & I tested a wholesale auction, Open Lane, through a local Ford dealership a few months ago and the winning bid at wholesale was $104,700. I have seen these same low trade in offers from Tesla Canada for my Model S & X. The only competitive trade in offers I’ve received from Tesla Canada were for my Chrysler Pacifica minivan and my Rivian R1T. Based on what I see on X, Tesla USA trade in offers for the Cybertruck are healthy. Something seems different with Tesla Canada and how they calculate trade in offers as they consistently appear to undervalue their own cars.
