Volkswagen to Automatically Limit ID.4 Charging to 80% in U.S. Over Battery Fire Risk

Red 2024 Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen is preparing to remotely limit charging to 80% on thousands of ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States as a precaution against potential battery fires. Owners will have until October 21 to opt out before the restriction takes effect around October 27, 2026.

The move follows Volkswagen’s recall of more than 28,000 ID.4s in Canada and the U.S., which we reported on earlier this month. The recall affects 22,524 vehicles in the U.S. and another 5,633 in Canada.

According to Volkswagen’s customer notice, affected American owners are being offered the option, through the myVW app, to decline the temporary charging restriction.

Owners who accept the change, or simply take no action, will have their maximum charging level automatically set to 80%. Those who opt out must continue manually limiting charging to 80% until repairs are completed.

The situation is different in Canada. Transport Canada currently advises affected owners of 2023-2025 ID.4s (recall 2026-469) to manually set their maximum charge level to 80%, and says Volkswagen will notify owners by mail. Volkswagen Canada has not confirmed whether the automatic restriction or opt-out option will be introduced here.

The precaution is also being implemented in Europe, where Volkswagen says it has already remotely applied an 80% charging limit to most affected ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 vehicles. CUPRA has confirmed similar measures for the Born.

Volkswagen says certain charging conditions above 80% could cause battery overheating and potentially a fire. The root cause remains under investigation, and a permanent repair has not been developed.

Volkswagen has not told owners to stop driving, but owners are advised to maintain the charging restriction. Once a repair becomes available, Volkswagen will notify owners, with recall work performed free of charge.
