Tesla Updates Wall Connector and Powerwall With Smarter Charging

Tesla is rolling out a new software update, not for its vehicles but home energy devices, that makes it easier for owners to charge their vehicles using excess solar energy or electricity purchased at the lowest available rates.

The new functionality arrives with firmware version 26.34 for the Powerwall and Gen 3 Wall Connector, allowing the two devices to work together to automatically manage home charging.

The update introduces two charging options, with the one used depending on how owners have configured their Powerwall.

Charging with solar or cheaper electricity

For owners using Powerwall’s Savings mode, the new Low-Cost Charging feature considers electricity rates and solar production to determine when to charge their vehicle.

This is particularly useful for households on time-of-use electricity plans, where rates can vary significantly throughout the day.

Meanwhile, owners using Self-Powered mode can take advantage of Charge on Solar, which prioritizes surplus electricity generated by their solar panels instead of drawing additional power from the grid. (via Not A Tesla App)

Tesla says the feature will still work toward the owner’s charging target, although daily charging amounts may vary depending on available solar energy.

The update isn’t limited to Tesla’s latest home batteries either. Owners with older Powerwall 2 systems can also use the functionality, provided they have a compatible Gen 3 Wall Connector.

How to enable smart charging

Owners can configure the feature through the Tesla mobile app by navigating to Settings > Vehicle Charging > Wall Connector > Set Charging Configuration.

Both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and only one Wall Connector can be configured for smart charging at a time.

Tesla also recommends setting a realistic departure time and a low minimum charging target, giving the system more flexibility to wait for cheaper electricity.

The update builds on Tesla’s existing home energy management features, further integrating its vehicles, charging equipment, and Powerwall batteries into a single system.
