Tesla begins construction on Canada’s northernmost Supercharger in Fort McMurray [Alberta]

Tesla has officially started construction on its long-awaited Supercharger in Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. Once completed, the site will become the northernmost Supercharger in Canada, extending Tesla’s fast-charging network into one of the country’s most remote, and EV-resistant regions of the country.

The new station is located at 9713 Hardin Street in Fort McMurray and was first added to Tesla’s Find Us map in December 2024. Earlier this month the company updated its website to indicate the site was finally under construction, and now thanks to one of our readers in the area, we have our first look at the site.

While construction is still in its very early stages, one detail that stands out is that the site’s electrical transformer has already been installed. That may not seem significant, but transformers are often among the biggest causes of delays for new Supercharger projects due to utility coordination and long lead times. In many cases, the charging stalls and equipment are ready well before the transformer arrives.

With that piece already in place, the remaining work, including installing the Supercharger cabinets, charging posts, and completing electrical connections, will hopefully progress without the lengthy delays seen at some other locations across the country.

As we noted, the Fort McMurray Supercharger will be Canada’s northernmost Supercharger once it is energized. Currently, that title belongs to the Grande Prairie station, which only opened in September last year.

But this site is also notable for another reason. Fort McMurray sits at the centre of Alberta’s oil sands industry and has long been synonymous with Canada’s oil and gas sector. The arrival of a Tesla Supercharger in one of the country’s most energy-focused communities is a big moment for the expansion of EV infrastructure into a region where electric vehicles (EVs) have historically not only had limited charging options, but very little public support overall.

Fort McMurray is still more than 430 km from Edmonton, making the journey difficult for Tesla drivers in the middle of winter,. However, another Supercharger is built and waiting to be turned on in Wandering River, located almost exactly halfway between the two cities. Once both stations are open, the route will become much more practical year-round, not only for Tesla driver, but all EV owners.
