Rivian has halted the delivery of the R2 vehicles in Half Moon Grey after a unit was discovered to have a front bumper of a different shade. The pause affects about 800 orders.
The issue surfaced when a customer was to take delivery of their car. According to a Reddit post by u/andymoog, the fulfilment center finally notified him he could pick up his R2. This was after a delay of more than a week. However, he discovered he had longer to wait, as his EV came with a bumper of the wrong shade. (via RivianTrackr)
The customer stated that his car’s color was Half Moon Grey, but the bumper stood out with its El Cap Granite finish. Rivian offers El Cap Granite, a darker shade, only on the R1.
Andymoog was initially offered the option of driving home and having the service center swap the bumper at a later date. However, the service center decided to withdraw the offer and cancelled the delivery appointment altogether.
Multiple sources have now confirmed that Rivian is temporarily halting deliveries of the Half Moon Grey R2. The mismatch likely resulted from the practice of separately painting body parts before assembly.
The VIN indicates about 800 R2s are affected, meaning hundreds of customers with orders will endure more wait. Rivian has not stated when deliveries will resume.
While the color mix-up does not affect the car’s usability, such incidents show Rivian may need to audit its quality control process.
Rivian started delivering the R2 in June 2026. The electric SUV remains highly sought after, with a day-one unit listed on a used car platform for $20,000 more than the owner paid for it.
