Tesla’s Japan sales boom continues with another record-setting month in May

Tesla’s momentum in Japan is showing no signs of slowing down. After a strong start to the year, new registration data shows the automaker is continuing its hot streak with sales nearly tripling in May 2026.

According to figures released by the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA), Tesla registrations in Japan jumped 182% year-over-year in May to 1,996 vehicles. As with previous reports, Tesla’s numbers are included in the organization’s “Others” category because the company does not officially disclose detailed registration data in Japan. However, nearly all of this figure is widely attributed to Tesla.

The latest results pushed Tesla’s year-to-date total to 8,194 vehicles, up approximately 157% compared to the same period in 2025, when the company had recorded just 3,178 registrations through May.

The strong performance also allowed Tesla to move ahead of Audi in cumulative 2026 sales, placing the automaker fourth overall among imported passenger vehicle brands in Japan. Only Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen now remain ahead of Tesla in the rankings.

June could bring Tesla Japan’s biggest month ever

While May’s performance was already a major leap forward, June could end up being even larger. Tesla typically concentrates a significant portion of its deliveries in Japan at the end of each quarter, meaning the automaker could now be heading toward its biggest quarterly delivery push since the company entered the market.

At its current pace, Tesla is now tracking toward annual sales of roughly 19,000 to 20,000 vehicles in the country, far above the approximately 10,600 deliveries it achieved in 2025 – which itself was already a record year.

Retail and service expansion helping fuel growth

Tesla’s rapid rise in Japan can be linked to a major overhaul of its local retail and service strategy. As we have previously report, the company expanded aggressively over the past year into high-traffic shopping centres rather than relying solely on traditional roadside dealership locations. Tesla also increased its physical footprint across Japan, opening stores in new regions including Okinawa and Hokkaido.

At the same time, Tesla has been preparing for its growing customer base by expanding after-sales support. Tesla says it plans to grow its Japanese service network to more than 30 locations while also partnering with dozens of third-party auto care facilities capable of servicing Tesla vehicles.

The automaker is also continuing to expand its Supercharger network across the country, targeting more than 1,000 charging points in Japan by 2027.
