Tesla has achieved a major milestone in Australia, with the Model Y becoming the country’s best-selling vehicle in May 2026.

The record-setting result saw the automaker deliver 6,433 vehicles in Australia in May, its second-highest monthly sales total ever. The bulk of those deliveries came from the Model Y, which recorded 5,605 sales, with the Model 3 making up the remaining 828 units, which itself was nearly three times more than the same month last year.

The achievement makes the Model Y not only the the top-selling EV in the country, but the top-selling vehicle, even when compared against gas-powered vehicles. In a distant second were perennial favourites in Australia, the Ford Ranger (4,474) and Toyota HiLux (4,005). (via Drive)

The performance also helped propel Tesla back into Australia’s top 10 automotive brands by monthly sales volume, ranking sixth overall. Tesla’s sales increased more than 65% compared to the same month last year.

EV Adoption Continues to Accelerate

The Model Y’s success coincided with another record month for EV adoption in Australia. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for nearly 20% of all new vehicle sales in May, while electrified vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, represented almost half of the market.

As with the rest of the world, the recent surge in EV demand is likely due to higher fuel prices, which have encouraged more buyers to consider alternatives to traditional gas and diesel vehicles.

Model YL Helping Drive Demand

Part of Tesla’s momentum can also be attributed to the recently introduced six-seat Model YL, which expands not onlt the Model Y lineup with a new variant, but strengthens the appeal of the vehicle to larger families.

Tesla Australia and New Zealand Country Director Thom Drew said the automaker’s recent performance reflects more than a single strong month.

“This is not an isolated result. It reflects our sustained commitment to delivering world-class electric vehicles and an ownership experience that continues to raise the bar for the industry,” Drew said. (via The Driven)

While Tesla’s May performance was notable on its own, the Model Y’s position at the top of Australia’s overall sales rankings is the bigger story. For years, EVs have steadily gained market share in Australia, but May 2026 marked the first time one has outsold every gas, diesel, and hybrid competitor in the country.
