Tesla adds new Service Mode tool for camera cleaning

More than a year after Tesla confirmed it was working on a “comprehensive cleaning solution” for its camera-based driver assistance systems, the company appears to be taking another step toward addressing one of the most common complaints from owners.

Added to Service Mode through the 2026.20 software update and spotted by X user Max, a new Forward Camera Cleaning procedure is designed to address haziness or contamination that can build up on the cameras over time, potentially affecting the performance of Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features.

It is worth nothing the procedure is only available in Service Mode and intended for use by Tesla Service employees, but owners can still access it on their own – more on that below.

New Four-Step Camera Cleaning Process

The new tool guides technicians through a four-step process:

1. Clean forward camera view per service procedure
2. Verify camera view is clear after cleaning
3. Record the completion of windshield cleaning to the vehicle history
4. Reset DAS (Driver Assistance System)

The screen also allows technicians to switch between the vehicle’s Main and Wide forward-facing camera views to confirm image quality after cleaning. Once the process is complete, a DAS reset is performed, with Tesla noting that any related alerts will clear after the reset succeeds.

Unfortunately, the release notes indicate this guide is only available on vehicles with AI4 hardware, and not for the older cars with AI3/HW3.

Addressing a Longstanding Issue

Camera cleanliness has become increasingly important as Tesla continues to rely exclusively on cameras for FSD functionality.

While the front cameras are located behind the windshield and protected from direct exposure, they can still suffer from haze, residue, windshield contamination, or film buildup over time. Any reduction in image clarity can impact the system’s ability to accurately interpret its surroundings, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

In January 2025, Tesla acknowledged the problem publicly when the Tesla AI account on X confirmed the company was developing a “comprehensive cleaning solution” for vehicle cameras. At the time, Tesla did not provide details on what that solution might involve, nor whether it would apply only to future vehicles or be retrofitted to existing cars.

More Than Just Maintenance?

While the new Service Mode tool is not the automated camera cleaning system many owners have been hoping for, it suggests Tesla is paying closer attention to camera visibility and image quality.

The addition of a dedicated cleaning workflow, camera verification tools, and a required DAS reset indicates Tesla views camera clarity as an important factor in the performance of its driver-assistance systems.

How to Access Service Mode

As noted, owners can access Tesla’s Service Mode by going to the Software tab in your vehicle’s on-screen menu. Press and hold the word “Model” for 3 seconds, after which a password prompt will appear – type in “service” and click enter. 

Proceed With Caution

While Service Mode is available to vehicle owners, it is primarily intended for trained Tesla technicians and service personnel. Many of the settings and procedures can affect vehicle systems, calibration data, and diagnostic functions. Owners should avoid making changes unless they fully understand the purpose of the procedure and follow Tesla’s service instructions. Incorrect use of Service Mode could result in warning messages, disabled features, or the need for additional service visits to restore normal operation.
