Volkswagen Confirms ID. Tiguan Will Replace ID.4, With Canadian Launch Coming in 2027

Volkswagen is officially retiring the ID.4 name, replacing its electric SUV with the ID. Tiguan as it shifts its EV lineup toward some of its most recognizable nameplates. The new model will debut in October before launching in Europe early next year, followed by Canada later in 2027.

The ID. Tiguan will also replace the ID.5, Volkswagen’s coupe-style electric SUV, while sitting alongside the gas and hybrid Tiguan rather than replacing it.

The move brings another familiar name into Volkswagen’s electric lineup after the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. It also gives the automaker’s electric SUV a name attached to one of its strongest-selling vehicles. More than 8.3 million Tiguans have been produced, while combined Tiguan and Tayron deliveries topped one million units last year.

The outgoing ID.4 has also been an important model for Volkswagen, with the ID.4 and ID.5 recording more than 950,000 deliveries since 2021. However, production of the North American ID.4 ended at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee factory in April.

Volkswagen hasn’t revealed full specifications for the ID. Tiguan, which remains under camouflage. The updated SUV is expected to move to the MEB+ platform and receive significant interior changes, including a larger instrument display and the return of more physical controls. Reports have also pointed to conventional exterior door handles and potentially lower-cost LFP batteries for entry-level versions.

The ID. Tiguan is expected to reach Canadian dealerships several months after its European launch, although Volkswagen has not provided a specific date.

Its arrival will give Volkswagen another opportunity in Canada’s EV market, where the previous ID.4 qualified for the federal EVAP incentive in eligible configurations. Whether the ID. Tiguan will qualify will depend on its Canadian pricing and the program’s requirements when it launches.

The reveal is coming as Volkswagen adjusts the pace of its broader Canadian EV plans. Earlier this month, PowerCo delayed the start of battery production at its $7 billion St. Thomas, Ontario plant from 2027 until 2029.
