Rivian’s R2 SUV is drawing attention after newly released EPA certification data shows the vehicle matches the Tesla Model Y Performance in overall efficiency while offering slightly more driving range.
The figures represent one of the closest comparisons yet between Tesla and a competing electric SUV in the high-volume crossover segment, an area Tesla has largely dominated for years thanks to the success of the Model Y.
According to recently released EPA certification data, the Rivian R2 Performance AWD delivers the same combined efficiency rating as the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance, while also offering more driving range.
The EPA numbers show the Rivian R2 Performance achieves 105 MPGe combined and consumes 32 kWh per 100 miles, identical to the Model Y Performance. However, Rivian’s new SUV edges ahead in total EPA-estimated range, delivering 330 miles (531 km) compared to the Model Y Performance’s 306 miles (492 km). These figures are slightly lower than previously leaked documents.
Wheel and Tire Choice Makes a Big Difference
The EPA figures also highlight how much wheel and tire choices can impact EV efficiency. Rivian’s R2 equipped with optional 20-inch all-terrain tires sees its efficiency drop to 99 MPGe combined, with total range falling to 307 miles (494 km).
While the extra range is largely due to Rivian using a slightly larger battery pack, that also means if it had the same size pack as the Model Y, it would actually be more efficient. The comparison is still notable because Tesla has long dominated the industry when it comes to energy efficiency.
That advantage has helped Tesla reduce battery costs, improve margins, and extract more range from smaller battery packs than most competitors. For years, rivals have struggled to close the gap.
Rivian Closes the Gap on Tesla
What makes Rivian’s achievement even more surprising is the R2’s design. Unlike the sleeker, more aerodynamic Model Y, the R2 features a more upright and rugged SUV profile. It is also expected to weigh significantly more than Tesla’s crossover, factors that would normally hurt efficiency.
Pricing between the two vehicles is also extremely close. The Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition starts at US$57,990, while the Tesla Model Y Performance starts at US$57,490.
Rivian is expected to begin deliveries next week on June 8, with more configuration invitations being sent out and demo drives launching on the same day.
