Rivian has asked some R2 owners to refrain from charging their cars with DC pending a technical inspection. The problem has been traced to the gap at the DC charger connector-to-header joint.
According to details shared by a Reddit user, Rivian is actively contacting R2 owners to schedule a technical check of the DC charger header. The EV maker is examining the high-voltage distribution system. It will replace the DCFC Header Assembly and DCFC Connector Assembly, if required.
The R2 owner received the message on August 19 through the Rivian app. They inquired whether they could continue charging with DC and operate their car as usual before the appointment date. A Rivian rep replied that they should avoid fast charging until their unit is checked and passed as OK.
Another R2 owner was also contacted and has posted details of their own invitation. They were told via a voice message that Rivian is investigating a similar potential issue and were given an appointment for a check. The customer initially thought Rivian contacted them based on telemetry data, but they later realised Rivian was targeting units from a particular batch by VIN.
While automakers routinely issue recalls to fix problems, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) often coordinates them. However, there is no indication that Rivian has filed any notice with the federal regulator.
The R2 rollout has not been without issues since Rivian started deliveries in June. The company paused order fulfilment for the Half Moon Grey color option after a unit was found with a front bumper shade that differed from the rest of the body.
