Nuro gets the green light for robotaxi service test in California

Nuro is the latest robotaxi company to receive a Drivered Pilot Permit from the California Public Utilities Commission to begin testing autonomous passenger services on California roads.

The permit will allow Nuro to pilot passenger-carrying operations with a safety driver on board. This permit is in addition to the DMV permit they received in April, which allows them to test autonomous driving systems without a driver in the vehicle.

Nuro is a joint partnership with Uber and Lucid Motors and currently has around 100 robotaxis testing in California and across several cities in the rest of the US. It is now the fifth robotaxi company to hold both a DMV Driverless Testing Permit and a CPUC Drivered Pilot Permit.

The company has confirmed that the San Francisco Bay Area will be its first paid market and that it started testing back in December 2025. As of April, the company began testing driverless services with select Uber employees in the Bay Area via the Uber app.

Nuro has not confirmed when they will roll out testing for members of the public. However, with the permit provided, we could see an option for select Uber riders to pop up over the next few weeks.
