NIO cuts prices by over $4,000 across all models, changes battery swap service

In a shocking change in policy, NIO has decided to join other EV makers in cutting its prices. A few months ago, NIO announced that it would not join other EV automakers like Tesla in cutting their prices. CEO William Li said its low gross margin prevented it from joining in price cuts at the time.

However, NIO has decided to reverse course and announced ~$4,200 discounts on all its models starting June 12. That is not the only announcement from the Chinese automaker.

In addition to the price cuts, NIO is ending its free battery swap service. Instead, customers will have to purchase it separately for a one time fee. Nio is also offering its customers a few other perks. Anyone who puts down a deposit will also receive the following:

  • Six-year or 150,000 km warranty for the first owner
  • Ten-year unlimited mileage warranty on the electric control, electric drive and motor
  • Six-years of free internet connectivity
  • Eight GB of monthly internet coverage
  • Free lifetime roadside assistance

Those who put down a deposit for the new ES6 or ES8 owners will also receive a free home charger.

Here is the new pricing, with a battery and battery as a service option via the China Evening Post.
