Elon Musk elected to the National Academy of Engineering

This afternoon, the National Academy of Engineering elected 111 new members and 22 international members. Along the 111 new US members was SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

The National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Members of the academy have:

  • made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education.

While other members have:

  • pioneered new and developing fields of technology
  • made major advancements in traditional fields of engineering; or
  • developed or implemented innovative approaches to engineering education.

The election of the new members of the National Academy of Engineering is a year-long process. Including the newly inducted class, the academy now has 2,388 US members and 310 international members.

For Elon Musk, the academy wrote:

  • Founder, chief executive officer, and chief engineer, SpaceX, Hawthorne, Calif. For breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and operation of reusable launch vehicles and sustainable transportation and energy systems.

Musk fired off a quick tweet, nothing he appreciated the honour.

As per the press release by the academy, the newly elected class will be formally inducted during the National Academy of Engineering annual meeting on October 2, 2022.
