We have seen thousands of new Tesla cars lined up in Chinese ports this month waiting to be exported to other countries. One of those countries was Japan, as a large batch of Model 3 and more importantly Model Y cars arrived in the country on Monday.
Back in June Tesla launched Model Y orders in Japan, along with Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Deliveries of the electric SUV have already begun in those countries, and now it is Japan’s turn.
Hundreds of Model Ys were spotted driving off the Trans Harmony 1 cargo ship in Yokohama on Monday by Twitter users @Membo1003 and @Tesken88.

All of the Model Ys that arrived were the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, as the Design Studio in Japan indicates the only other variant available to order, the Model Y Performance, won’t be arriving in the country until later this year.
In Japan the RWD starts at ¥6,190,000 (~$58,500 CAD) and the Performance at ¥8,090,000 ($~76,500 CAD).
Since its introduction in 2020 the Model Y has quickly gained in popularity and now outsells the Model 3 in many markets. Elon Musk predicted before the electric SUV went on sale that it could become the best selling car in the world. Based on its sales trends it could become the best selling car by revenue this year, and by overall volume in 2023.
