Tesla pauses production at Fremont Factory for upgrades

A week after CEO Elon Musk announced Tesla would pause production at its facilities, the Fremont Factory has entered downtime. The purpose, as Teslarati reports, is to install upgrades in the factory.

Musk indicated the third quarter would see lower production numbers at the last Earnings Call. The summer shutdowns on all its factories could impact delivery figures, even if slightly.

It has been suggested that Tesla is preparing its Fremont plant to accommodate new production lines for the new Model 3 builds. However, the automaker might also be using the opportunity to expand the now-cramped factory.

Meanwhile, filings with the City of Fremont have steadily revealed Tesla’s plans for upgrading the facility showing tool installs, line upgrades, and other improvements.

However, according to footage from a Met God in the Wilderness’ (on YouTube) recent drone flight over the Fremont site, the upgrading activities might have started. The logistic lots have been nearly emptied, while the entrances have been closed. In addition, there are no haulers in sight, suggesting the production line has been idle for some time.

The footage also reveals scant activities in the casting and manufacturing segments of the plant.

Against the persistent rumors of the Model 3 Highland, coupled with public sightings of prototypes, it is plausible that the rejigged sedan is the reason for the upgrades. Some of the filings have even borne the Highland name.
