A new purpose built rental apartment building in Welland, Ontario is aiming to reduce carbon emissions, both during construction and once the building is completed.
One way in which it is going to achieve that is by providing a Tesla Model 3 for tenants to rent.
The six-storey, 129-unit building is being built by Elevate Living Niagara. The company decided to make it a rental building to help address the issue of affordable housing in the region.
To give tenants an equally affordable mode of transportation, the Model 3 will be available to rent at the same price as public transportation.
“It’s so folks can have access to reliable transportation at an affordable rate, and a way that’s better for the environment,” developer/builder Drew Toth told the Welland Tribune.
Building on the green theme, residents will also have access to electric scooters and bicycles. The Tesla is being offered through a partnership with the car-sharing program Kite.
The building will also feature smart technology. Tenants will be able to enter the building using their mobile device, as well as control HVAC systems in their unit.
It will still be a while until the building is complete and tenants can move in. A ground breaking ceremony was held at the site on Niagara Street earlier this week.
Elevate Living Niagara is also planning a second phase that will include a five-storey building with 84 units. No word if that building will also feature a rentable Tesla.
