The family of an Utah motorcyclist is suing Tesla, claiming that Autopilot and its other safety features are defective and inadequate.
In 2022, a motorcyclist was struck by a Model 3 on Autopilot at 75-80 mph. The Model 3 struck the back of the Harley Davidson, throwing the rider off the bike.
The rider was pronounced dead on the scene.
The motorcyclist’s family claims that the Model 3 driver was tired and unable to operate the vehicle. Even so, the complaint notes that the Autopilot cameras should have detected the motorcycle as a hazard and slowed down.
Per the complaint:
A reasonably prudent driver, or adequate auto braking system, would have and could have slowed or stopped without colliding with the motorcycle.
None of these allegations have been tested in court. However, this is not the first Autopilot-related suit in which Tesla has been involved. There are several cases in front of various courts about the technology and its safety.
Tesla has not commented on this specific lawsuit or any of the claims made within it.
