Tesla’s Giga Berlin workers will soon be riding on battery-powered trains to work as the EV maker has decided to electrify the train shuttle it built for its factory workers, as reported by the Berliner Zeitung.
Tesla’s attempt to make its staff commute to work easier raised some eyebrows as the train shuttle it arranged ran on diesel. Now, the company is grabbing the opportunity to make things right by switching to battery-powered trains. The company that operated the railway for Tesla, Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB), will see its contract to the end this month, at which time it will move the diesel-powered to another location where they will be used.
In their place, Tesla workers will ride on electric railcars supplied by Siemens, reports the Berliner Zeitung.
The shuttle service is a straightforward one lasting only 12 minutes with no stop. It is only five kilometers long and makes about 60 runs every day from Monday to Friday.
The shuttle, however, will be getting a break soon as Tesla plans to shut down Giga Berlin for five days in June to optimize some of the production processes. The facility will get bigger as Tesla has acquired permission for an expansion adding a freight station and logistic facilities.
