Tesla leads as Canada’s ZEV registrations hit all-time high of 9.4% in Q3 2022

After a dip in quarter two, zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) registrations in Canada bounced back to record levels in Q3.

According to data from S&P Global Mobility, battery electric vehicles now hold a record 7.9 per cent of the market share.

The previous high for battery electric registrations was Q1 2022, where the segment hit 6.2 per cent. (via Electric Autonomy)

When you include plug-in hybrid vehicles, which are considered ZEV under Transport Canada’s guidelines, the total market share increases to 9.4 per cent.

By province, the leader in the clubhouse continues to be British Columbia.

Almost one in five vehicles (19.9 per cent) registered in the province is a zero-emission vehicle, a new record.

Quebec comes in second place with a strong showing of 13.3 per cent.

However, that is still below the record the province established in Q1 of 13.7 per cent.

While Ontario continues to trail in third with 7.6 per cent.

The good news for Ontario is 7.6 per cent is 1.6 percentage points above the last record quarter.

Surprisingly, the Yukon was fourth by overall percentage, with 5.8 per cent of new car registrations being EVs.

Driving these numbers are three major automakers.

Tesla led all manufacturers in EV registrations, with 41,874 new vehicles registered through the first three quarters of the year.

While Ford and Chevrolet rounded out the top three.

Interestingly, Hyundai fell out of the top three, which could point towards a significant delay in getting the ever-popular Ioniq 5 to clients.
