Apple held the 2022 edition of their Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this morning and unveiled an all-new version of CarPlay that will take over a car’s infotainment display and all of its functions.
The next-generation CarPlay will integrate completely with a vehicle’s operating system and work over multiple screens with varying aspect ratios.
Once connected, drivers will be able to control the radio, seat heaters, climate control and other vehicle functions, all within Apple’s ecosystem.
CarPlay will also display a digital instrument cluster to show your vehicles speed, fuel gauge (including battery state of charge) and other information, which in typical Apple fashion can be customized with different themes to give your vehicle a different look and feel every day of the week.
Just like on your iPhone, CarPlay will also be able to display widgets on one of the vehicle’s screens.
Apple didn’t specify which vehicles will be the first to be compatible with the next generation of CarPlay, but did list a number of automakers that they are working with to bring the feature to market. Those automakers include Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar-Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo and Polestar.
It will still be a while until we see this version of CarPlay as Apple says the first vehicles to feature it won’t be announced until late 2023.
