Rivian patent reveals clever tailgate bike rack that saves truck bed space

A recently published patent application from Rivian shows the automaker has come up with a clever way to store your bicycle without sacrificing any space in the bed of the R1T electric truck.

According to the application posted on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website, their system secures the bike to the inside of the tailgate when it is dropped down.

Images in the application even show it can be used when towing a trailer. (see image above)

Elongated grooves in the tailgate itself provide extra versatility, allowing owners to use different sized wheel mounts or other hardware that can be bolted in to stay in place.

It is unclear if this will be a standard feature on the R1T, or if perspective owners will have to pay extra for optional grooves.

Current versions of the R1T being delivered to employees and customers show no signs of a system like this.
