Elon Musk teases Plaid track mode, waypoints, and “other things” in software update coming soon

One of the most requested features from Tesla owners, waypoints, will be arriving soon in a software update.

At least that is “soon” according to CEO Elon Musk, who said today that waypoints, a Plaid track mode, and “other things” will be included in an upcoming software update that is “probably a few weeks away.”

Waypoints

The addition of waypoints is a long time coming. After years of requests, Musk finally agreed to add waypoints in September last year.

Evidence that Tesla had started working on the feature soon after that was found by hacker @greentheonly, but it was still in an incomplete state.

If you’re unfamiliar, waypoints allow you to enter multiple destinations into your navigation. This feature has been implemented in numerous GPS software solutions for many years, but has yet to make an appearance in Tesla’s navigation software, which only allows you to enter in one destination.

Plaid Track Mode

Musk also mentioned Track Mode for the new Model S Plaid. The feature is already available for the Model 3 Performance, so it only makes sense that it comes to Tesla’s flagship vehicle.

The additional software allows owners to see g-force through corners, as well as the temperature of the tires, motors and battery pack. Drivers can also adjust the balance of the car to favour a full rear-wheel drive layout, how much traction control you want to enable, and how much regenerative braking the car has.

News of Track Mode comes on the same day that Tesla broke the lap record for a production electric car at the Nurburgring racetrack.

Other Things

Always one to leave us wanting more information, Musk also said there will be “other things” in this upcoming software update. Some of the features we have been asked for by Tesla owners and promised by Musk to be coming soon include things like activating the side cameras when the turn signal is used, viewing Sentry Mode from your mobile device, a WiFi garage controller, and much more.
