Amazon announced in September 2019 it had agreed to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian. Nearly two years later the online retail giant has provided an update on their rollout plans.
When the company announced the purchase, they planned to have up to 10,000 of the electric delivery vans on the road by the end of 2022. They also planned to have the entire fleet of 100,000 vehicles operational by 2030.
In a blog post discussing their sustainability report, everything appears to be on schedule. Amazon said the first vehicles were deployed in Los Angeles in February earlier this year. They were actually testing on public roads earlier than that, as we reported the first official sighting of a test vehicle in early January.
They plan to expand deliveries with the electric vans to 15 additional U.S. cities by the end of 2021. They also announced they are sticking to their plan to have 10,000 on the roads by the end of next year, and 100,000 by 2030.
The company also said they have been able to deliver more than 20 million packages in North America and Europe using the Rivian vans.
