Hyundai’s popular Kona electric vehicle (EV) is getting a makeover for the 2022 model year with a new exterior design and updated interior.
Exterior Changes
Described by the South Korean automaker as a “sleeker front fascia design”, the front grille has received probably the biggest makeover. The previous dimpled design has been replaced by a smooth front bumper reminiscent of the Tesla Model 3.
With one glaring exception, a large charge port door positioned off-center in the front bumper.
On the outside the 2022 Kona EV also gets new headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs) and a new, more efficient alloy wheel design. The rear bumper and taillights also feature a new design.
Interior Changes
The new Kona is now equipped with a 10.25-inch digital cluster and 10.25-inch center stack display, replacing the previous 7-inch center screen. New connectivity features have been added, including Dynamic Voice Recognition that can allow drivers to activate and control features like climate, audio, and steering wheel heating.
Taking a page out of Tesla’s book, ‘Digital Key’ has been added with a dedicated smartphone Blue Link app. With the app owners can lock/unlock the EV, activate the panic alert and start the car. The app replaces traditional car keys, and also allows for secure sharing of keys with family and friends.
Performance Changes
Not much has changed “under the hood.” The 2022 Kona EV still has a range of 258 miles (415km) thanks to a 150kW (201 horsepower) electric motor powered by a 64kWh lithium-ion battery.
The EV is equipped with an onboard 7.2kW charger. According to Hyundai, the Kona can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 47 minutes using a DC fast charger. For level 2 charging, a 10 to 100 percent boost will take 9 hours 15 minutes.
2022 Hyundai Kona EV Price
Hyundai has yet to reveal official pricing, but it is not expected to be much different than the current MSRP. In Canada the Kona EV starts at $44,999, while in the U.S. it starts at $37,390.
