Chery is now preparing to launch in Canada early next year, a later target than the “coming late 2026” message on the Canadian website for its Omoda and Jaecoo brands.
The Chinese automaker is also open to technology partnerships with American automakers.
Chery vice president Charlie Zhang told Reuters at the company’s headquarters in Wuhu, China, that Chery is making preparations for a brand launch in Canada early next year. He also said the company would welcome technology tie-ups with American automakers, though he did not name any companies or describe what such deals could involve.
As we reported last month, the bilingual Omoda and Jaecoo site said the two brands were coming in late 2026. Zhang had also previously said Chery aimed to have sales ready in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
Reuters did not name the brands involved in the Canadian launch.
Chery has already been laying the groundwork for its Canadian arrival. Earlier this year, several Omoda and Jaecoo vehicles were spotted in Toronto, an early sign of the company’s plans.
Neither Reuters nor Chery explained why the target has moved.
Chery’s Canadian plans come as the federal government has opened the market to more Chinese-made EVs. Since March 1, Canada has allowed up to 49,000 China-built EVs a year at a 6.1% tariff on a first-come, first-served basis. As of October 9, 33,069 of those spots remained.
Chery won’t be the only Chinese automaker arriving next year. Geely has also confirmed plans to enter Canada, with its first vehicles coming in 2027, setting up what could be a busy year for new entrants to the Canadian EV market.
