Alberta is offering rural and remote households up to $1,000 toward satellite internet equipment, with SpaceX’s Starlink currently the only provider that qualifies under the new program.
The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program, announced last week, is aimed at approximately 10,000 households that still lack access to high-speed internet and aren’t included in existing broadband expansion projects. Eligible residents can receive a one-time reimbursement covering hardware, installation and any applicable taxes.
Alberta has turned to Starlink before to address connectivity gaps. In November 2023, the province launched a pilot program to bring satellite internet to underserved communities.
The latest initiative comes as other provinces take different approaches to rural connectivity. Ontario’s decision to cancel its $100 million Starlink agreement has delayed its broadband expansion plans, while Quebec has continued working with the satellite internet provider.
Although Starlink is currently the only qualifying option, the Alberta program isn’t exclusive to SpaceX. Other low-Earth orbit satellite providers can qualify if their equipment delivers download speeds of at least 50 Mbps, upload speeds of 10 Mbps, and latency of 50 milliseconds or less.
Equipment bought from August 11, 2026, through March 31, 2027, is eligible for reimbursement. The rebate covers satellite dishes, mounting equipment, installation services, and taxes, but excludes monthly subscriptions, equipment rentals, and optional accessories.
Residents must first confirm their address is eligible, purchase the equipment, and complete their first month of service before applying through a verified Alberta.ca account.
Applications close March 31, 2027. Whether additional satellite providers qualify before then remains to be seen.
