How much range does a Tesla lose in a Canadian winter?
The battery requires energy to maintain its operating temperature, while heating the cabin, driving through snow and travelling against winter winds can further reduce efficiency.
According to Tesla’s official winter driving guidance, cold weather also increases aerodynamic drag and can temporarily limit the energy available from the battery.
Real-world Tesla winter range test in Canada
In February 2025, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) tested 14 electric vehicles in temperatures ranging from -7°C to -15°C. The vehicles travelled from Ottawa toward Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, until their batteries were depleted.
The Tesla Model 3 travelled 410 km, compared with its official Natural Resources Canada range of 584 km. That represents a 30% reduction in range.
| Vehicle | Official range | Winter range | Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Silverado EV | 724 km | 456 km | 14%* |
| Tesla Model 3 | 584 km | 410 km | 30% |
| Polestar 2 | 444 km | 384 km | 14% |
| Kia EV9 | 435 km | 349 km | 20% |
| Volkswagen ID.4 | 423 km | 338 km | 20% |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 483 km | 334 km | 31% |
CAA adjusted the Silverado EV’s results because it started with a 73% charge.
Across the test, vehicles travelled between 14% and 39% less than their official range.
How do you precondition a Tesla in winter?
Preconditioning is one of the most effective ways to improve winter efficiency.
It warms the battery and cabin before departure, reducing the energy required after you start driving. When the vehicle is plugged in, it can use electricity from your home charger rather than drawing that energy from the battery.
Tesla recommends activating climate controls at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure, although the time required depends on the outside temperature.
How to set up scheduled departure in a Tesla
Tesla now calls the feature Schedule, although some owners will remember it as Scheduled Departure.
From your vehicle’s touchscreen:
- Open Controls > Schedule.
- Select the location where you want the schedule to apply.
- Tap the icon beside Precondition.
- Choose your departure time, days and frequency.
- Tap Create.
You can also configure the same settings in the Tesla app under Schedule.
Should you precondition while plugged in?
Yes. Whenever possible, precondition while connected to a home charger.
Tesla also recommends scheduling charging to finish close to your departure time.
Owners using a standard 120-volt outlet should be aware that extremely cold temperatures can require more power than the outlet provides.
For more information on home charging options, see our Tesla home charging guide for Canada.
How can you maximize Tesla range in cold weather?
- Keep your Tesla plugged in when possible. This allows the charging system to help maintain battery temperature without relying entirely on stored energy.
- Use heated seats and the heated steering wheel. These features generally consume less energy than heating the entire cabin to a higher temperature.
- Check your tire pressure. Tesla says tire pressure decreases approximately 1 PSI for every 6°C drop in temperature.
- Use the Energy app. It provides information about consumption and projected range, helping identify where additional energy is being used.
- Remove accumulated snow. Clear the roof, hood, tailgate, cameras and sensors before driving.
- If your Tesla displays a blue snowflake beside the battery indicator, some stored energy is temporarily unavailable because the battery is cold.
Do you need winter tires on a Tesla in Canada?
Tesla recommends winter tires when driving in cold temperatures or where snow and ice may be present.
Transport Canada also recommends winter tires because summer and all-season tire compounds begin losing elasticity below approximately 7°C.
Canadian winter tire requirements by province
| Province | Requirement as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Quebec | Mandatory December 1 to March 15 for Quebec-registered vehicles |
| British Columbia | Required on designated highways October 1 to April 30, or March 31 on certain routes |
| Ontario | Not mandatory; insurers must offer a winter tire discount |
| Manitoba | Not mandatory; eligible owners can finance winter tires through MPI |
| Other provinces/territories | Check current local regulations |
Quebec winter tire rules
Quebec requires vehicles registered in the province to use approved winter tires between December 1 and March 15.
Non-compliance can result in fines ranging from $200 to $300.
Approved tires must display the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, or qualify as studded winter tires.
The requirement also applies to rental vehicles registered in Quebec, but vehicles registered outside the province are exempt from the provincial winter tire mandate.
British Columbia winter tire rules
B.C. requires winter tires or chains on most designated routes between October 1 and April 30. Some routes have requirements ending March 31.
This includes major mountain routes such as the Coquihalla and other highways where winter tire signs are posted.
Many roads in the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are exempt, although routes such as the Malahat have winter tire requirements.
B.C. accepts tires with either the M+S designation or the mountain/snowflake symbol, provided they have at least 3.5 mm of tread depth. The province recommends mountain/snowflake tires for severe winter conditions.
Ontario and Manitoba winter tire rules
Ontario does not require winter tires, but insurance companies must offer a discount to drivers who install them.
Manitoba also does not mandate winter tires. However, Manitoba Public Insurance offers eligible customers financing of up to $2,000 per vehicle.
As of October 1, 2026, tires financed through that program must be designed and marketed specifically for winter driving. All-weather tires no longer qualify, even if they display the mountain/snowflake symbol.
What winter tires does Tesla recommend?
Tesla recommends installing four matching winter tires with the mountain/snowflake symbol. For winter driving, Tesla advises against using tires with less than 4 mm of tread depth.
After changing tires, owners should update the vehicle settings under Controls > Service > Wheel & Tire > Tires. You can also read about Tesla’s in-car tire season settings.
How does cold weather affect Tesla charging and Supercharging?
Cold batteries cannot accept energy as quickly as batteries at their optimal operating temperature.
Tesla addresses this by automatically heating the battery when you navigate to a Supercharger.
How to precondition your battery before Supercharging
Enter the Supercharger as your destination using Tesla’s built-in navigation system. Tesla recommends navigating to the charger at least 30 to 45 minutes before arrival when possible.
If the Supercharger is closer than that, consider preconditioning the vehicle before leaving.
Tesla has also introduced battery heating through certain V3 and V4 Supercharger posts for standard-range, rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

What if your Tesla charge port freezes?
Use the Defrost Car function in the Tesla app, or the Inlet Heater setting under Controls > Service where available. Tesla says these functions can help free frozen charge port components.
Supercharger prices vary by location. Check our Canadian Supercharger price tracker for current rates.
How do you plan a Tesla winter road trip in Canada?
Tesla’s built-in Trip Planner is the best starting point. It calculates charging stops using vehicle information and real-time data, including expected battery levels upon arrival.
Before leaving, use our Tesla Trip Planner to estimate your route and charging requirements. The tool includes cold-weather settings for temperatures between -5°C and 5°C, and winter conditions below -5°C.
CAA also recommends considering shorter, more frequent charging stops rather than always charging to a very high percentage. However, maintaining an adequate reserve for your next destination is particularly important in winter.
Tesla winter driving checklist
Before leaving on a cold morning or a longer winter drive:
- Precondition the battery and cabin while plugged in.
- Check tire pressure and winter tire tread depth.
- Clear snow and ice from windows, lights, cameras and sensors.
- Fill the washer fluid reservoir with winter-rated fluid.
- Use Defrost Car if windows or the charge port are frozen.
- Check your route and expected arrival battery percentage.
