Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA are expanding their partnership to develop more advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving technology, with an eye on future SAE Level 4 systems.

Announced on Friday, the agreement builds on their existing partnership and combines Mercedes-Benz’s MB.OS operating system with NVIDIA’s latest artificial intelligence, computing, and safety technologies. The goal is to bring more capable automated driving features to future Mercedes vehicles, while laying the groundwork for future SAE Level 4 applications, including robolimousines.

The two companies first announced their partnership in 2020, with plans to develop a software-defined vehicle architecture capable of receiving new driving features through over-the-air updates.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz also confirmed plans to use the new S-Class as the foundation for a Level 4 robotaxi service being developed with NVIDIA and Uber. The luxury sedan features redundant steering, braking, computing, and power systems designed to support driverless operation.

Under the expanded agreement, Mercedes’ MB.OS will work with NVIDIA Hyperion’s computing and sensor architecture, paired with NVIDIA’s Alpamayo Stack, a complete driving software package that uses AI reasoning to handle urban point-to-point assistance, active safety features, and automated parking.

NVIDIA’s Halos safety system will build on Mercedes-Benz’s existing safety systems, adding a second, parallel safety layer that provides redundancy and guardrails.

The partnership also extends beyond the vehicle, with Mercedes using NVIDIA technology for engineering simulations and digital manufacturing.

Neither Mercedes-Benz nor NVIDIA provided a timeline for the next generation of automated driving features.
