Luxury automaker Aston Martin has once again postponed its first EV, this time to 2033. The company blames the delay on unpredictable legislation.
Aston Martin fans who want to drive an EV from the brand will have to wait a bit more. According to the CEO Adrian Hallmark, the latest tentative release date is now 2033. He revealed this at a media event in London.
The automakerinitially targeted 2025, but pushed it to 2027. Even under a new management team, the elusive electric car got postponed to 2030, before the latest delay to 2033.
Hallmark cited EV legislation as the culprit. He stated that policies change faster than automakers can cope with. The boss also implied that Aston Martin is sceptical of demand for top-end EVs. Cooling demand in the higher-cost bracket is common concern in the EV sector, with Tesla recently ending production of its two most expensive models.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin customers may be even more disappointed that 2033 is not a firm date. According to Hallmark, “I’m not going to give an absolute date, because it’s imprecise. It could be 2035, it might be 2033, but it’s in that three-year window. It’s not 2031.” (via Autocar)
For now, Aston Martin will focus on traditional internal combustion engines that it is known for. The company, however, recognises the need to comply with EV legislation by 2035 and plans to be ready for it.
Before the 2035 deadline, Aston Martin will likely be silently developing an electric model based on EV technologies from other automakers such as Lucid and Mercedes-Benz.
