Tesla says FSD v14 nearing release in Australia and New Zealand as new owners continue waiting for activation

Tesla has provided an update on Full Self-Driving (Supervised) for customers in Australia and New Zealand, confirming that FSD v14 is now in the final stages of local development and testing.

The update, sent directly to some customers in the region, also helps explain a situation that has frustrated a number of new Tesla owners over the past several months. While FSD (Supervised) v13 was launched in Australia and New Zealand in September last year, Tesla has not been activating the feature on newly delivered vehicles over the past few months, leaving some customers waiting despite having purchased the software package or subscribing to the service.

In the email, Tesla said, “FSD (Supervised) v14 for Hardware 4 vehicles is in its final stages of local development and testing. This release represents a meaningful step forward in performance and capability, and we want to ensure your experience reflects that from the moment it’s available on your vehicle.”

Tesla skipping v13 for new deliveries

The communication confirms Tesla has made a deliberate decision not to activate FSD v13 on recently delivered vehicles, instead holding those customers until v14 is ready for release.

That approach is a notable shift from the company’s traditional software rollout, where customers would typically receive the current version before later updating to a newer release. Instead, Tesla appears to want new customers to experience the software delivered in v14 instead of v13.

The company did not explain why, only to say that v14, which has been available in North America since October last year, is a “meaningful step forward.” Tesla also didn’t provide a specific launch date, but said it is actively working on development and testing and will notify customers when the update is ready to install.

For subscription customers, Tesla also confirmed billing will not begin until the software has been activated on their vehicle, ensuring owners are not charged while they wait.
