Rivian is kicking off 2026 with one of its most significant over-the-air (OTA) updates yet, especially for owners of Gen 1 R1T and R1S vehicles, delivering expanded performance features, deeper cold-weather insights, and a long-awaited Apple Watch companion app.
Sport Mode and Launch Mode Expand Across the Lineup
Headlining the update is the expansion of Sport Mode to all Dual-Motor configurations, regardless of generation or battery chemistry. Previously reserved for Performance and Quad-Motor variants, Sport Mode now unlocks sharper throttle response and stronger acceleration for a much broader group of R1 drivers.

Launch Mode is also being extended. Gen 1 Quad-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor models now gain access, alongside Gen 2 Performance Dual-Motor vehicles. The feature preconditions the powertrain for maximum acceleration from a standstill, giving more owners access to Rivian’s full performance potential.
Rivian also refined suspension behavior in Sport Mode. Drivers can now maintain a Standard ride height while selecting firmer or more moderate ride feel options, rather than having the vehicle automatically lower itself.

Enhanced Kneel Mode and Usability Improvements
Another welcome addition is an upgraded Kneel Mode. The SUV and pickup can now drop even lower for easier entry and loading, including from High ride height. Drivers can also activate kneeling on demand at speeds under 20 mph, adding flexibility in tight parking or loading scenarios.
Importantly, changing drive modes or adjusting ride settings no longer disengages advanced driver assistance features like Highway Assist or Universal Hands-Free, smoothing out the overall driving experience.

Smarter Cold-Weather Transparency
Winter performance gets a notable boost in 2026.03. A new blue battery shading graphic in the instrument cluster and mobile app clearly indicates how much range is temporarily unavailable due to low temperatures. Drivers will also receive proactive notifications with insights explaining cold-weather range impacts.
Rivian has also refined its battery preconditioning and charging logic to better prepare the pack for efficient energy recovery and improved performance in colder climates—an especially valuable update for owners in Canada and colder northern regions in the U.S.

Apple Watch App Brings Gen 1 Digital Key Support
One of the most talked-about additions is the new Apple Watch companion app. With the latest Rivian mobile app update, owners can lock and unlock doors, vent windows, sound the alarm, adjust cabin temperature, and set a charging limit directly from their wrist.
For the first time, Gen 1 owners can also use their Apple Watch as a digital key—provided the app is open in the foreground and LTE connectivity is available—allowing them to drive without carrying a physical key or iPhone.
With smoother visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5.5 and numerous under-the-hood refinements, Rivian’s 2026.03 update doesn’t just add features—it meaningfully enhances the ownership experience across the entire R1 lineup.
