Tesla Adds New In-Car Popup for Obstructed Front Cameras and Offers Free Cleaning

Tesla has added a new warning on their in-car displays in the latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) v14.1.7 update that highlights an issue that has quietly affected many vehicles – residue on the inside of the windshield that can interfere with Full Self-Driving (Supervised) performance.

Tesla has previously had a pop-up warning of obstructed camera visibility. However, those notifications covered all of the exterior cameras, and they were simply notifications that vision was obstructed and advised owners to clean the cameras themselves.

The new alert appears only for the interior forward-facing windshield camera, and offers a complimentary cleaning at a Service Center.

The new popup also appears on the main display and reads, “Your vehicle’s forward-facing camera is experiencing obstructed visibility. The inner surface of the windshield in front of the camera needs cleaning. Schedule a complimentary 15-minute cleaning in the Tesla App via Request Service > Outstanding Work > Windshield Camera Area Precision Cleaning.”

The rollout of this alert marks Tesla’s most visible push yet to address camera obstruction caused by film or haze left during manufacturing, or from off gassing from the interior materials after delivery. While Tesla has always cleaned this area at no cost when a vehicle is under its basic warranty, owners previously had to notice the issue themselves and manually book service.

Owners are directed to the Outstanding Work section in the Tesla app, where they can book a short 15-minute “Windshield Camera Area Precision Cleaning.” Because the appointment is fast and requires no parts, Service Centers are offering earlier availability — sometimes same-day if this is the only request.

Cleaning the interior glass is currently difficult for many owners to do themselves as you need to remove the camera housing, which risks breaking clips. Elon Musk has recently acknowledged this challenge directly, saying on X that making the front camera easier to clean was a “major focus” for Tesla as the company ramps up its vision-only approach.

The new popup could be a quick easy-win as part of a larger initiative to potentially redesign the housing to make it easier to remove and clean the cameras.
