Vancouver police are investigating a scary incident that left a pregnant woman seriously injured after a large rock was seemingly thrown through the windshield of a moving Tesla.
According to the Vancouver Police Department, the Tesla was travelling northbound on Nanaimo Street around 8:45 p.m. on March 30, approaching East 27th Avenue, when a two-pound rock smashed through the front windshield. The rock struck the woman, who was in the passenger seat, before landing on the floorboard of the vehicle.
According to police, she sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury and is currently recovering. Her unborn child was not reported to be harmed.
“This very serious incident could easily have resulted in someone’s death, but for a few inches,” said Sergeant Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). “We are working to determine whether this was a criminal act, and if someone intentionally targeted this Tesla.”
Investigators are still unsure where the rock originated or how it came to strike the vehicle. Police have canvassed the surrounding neighborhood and examined the car, and are now appealing to the public for assistance.
Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from Nanaimo Street, between East 22nd and East 29th Avenue, between 8:40 and 9 p.m. on March 30, are urged to contact police at 604-717-4021.
The incident comes amid a recent surge in politically motivated vandalism and mischief involving Tesla vehicles and facilities in Vancouver, and across Canada and the U.S. These acts have included fires, smashed windows, graffiti, and other forms of property damage at Supercharger stations, Tesla stores, and on private vehicles.
