Edmunds has announced its top rated electric car, SUV, and truck for 2025, recognizing the best in each category. This year’s winners are the Tesla Model 3, Kia EV9, and Rivian R1T.
Top Rated Electric Car: 2025 Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 has always been a strong contender in the EV market, but a significant refresh for 2024 has propelled it to the top of the rankings. Edmunds noted the new Model 3’s improved range and handling, a more refined interior, and better ride quality, all coming without an increase in price, as factors that made it the clear winner in this category.
“The Model 3’s breadth is easily its greatest strength. From the quiet and comfy Long Range model — which goes so far it easily dispels range anxiety — to the Performance trim that delivers supercar numbers for a fraction of the price, the Model 3 delivers at every price point and has something for anyone looking at an electric sedan,” Edmunds said.
While they didn’t beat out the Model 3, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 and BMW i5 received notable mentions and were given the title of “highly recommended.” Edmunds recommended the IONIQ 6 because of its build quality, spacious interior, comfortable suspension, and 800V architecture, while the i5 was recommended as a luxury EV that delivers on the quality you would expect from BMW.
Top Rated Electric SUV: 2025 Kia EV9
For the second year in a row, the Kia EV9 takes home the Edmunds Top Rated Electric SUV award. The three-row electric SUV offers a spacious, high-quality interior, excellent technology, and family-friendly practicality, all at a price that undercuts luxury competitors.
“The EV9 wowed us last year, and it continues to stand alone as the most well-rounded electric SUV you can get, especially if you need family space,” said Jonathan Elfalan, director, vehicle testing
The runners-up in this were the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Volkswagen ID. Buzz.
Top Rated Electric Truck: 2025 Rivian R1T
The Rivian R1T was named the best electric truck on the market, thanks in part to a refresh that brought with it improved range and software, and more trim options. Edmunds said the R1T combines luxury-like ride quality, excellent off-road capability, and quick acceleration, making it the most well-rounded electric pickup available.
“A light refresh gave us features we’ve longed for and even more impressive range. The R1T stands head and shoulders above every other electric pickup on sale right now,” said Nick Yekikian, senior news editor.
There was only one runner-up in the electric truck category, and that went to the Ford F-150 Lightning,
