Updated Tesla UI coming to Model 3/Y with Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta wide release

Model S Plaid UI

If you’re waiting for the new user interface (UI) that is currently available in refresh Model S to make its way to the Model 3 and Model Y, you might be in for a long wait. Or maybe not.

The uncertain timeline is thanks to comments made last night by CEO Elon Musk. When asked when we might see the new UI in the rest of the lineup, Musk tied the update to the wide release of Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta.

The uncertainty comes with the fact no one really knows what was meant by his reference to a wide release. Musk has been saying a wide release of FSD beta would be coming soon, using the now infamous “two week” timeline multiple times over the last few months, including as far back as November 2020.

Adding to that, we have yet to receive clarity on if this next big update, referred to as V9, will be a wide release to the entire FSD fleet and not limited to a small subset of beta testers.

Canadians could be in for an especially long wait since we are still waiting for any release of FSD beta north of the border.

Musk also added that all cars with the “FSD computer”, also known as HW3.0, will have a new “mind of car” view. Again, no one really knows yet what is meant by that, but the most likely guess is this is the view that is currently available to beta testers.

Tesla FSD Beta

This view was originally planned to be retired after beta testing, but fans persuaded Musk to keep it at least as an option for when FSD is finally released to the public.
