Tesla Model Y leads China’s BEV market in 2024 as registrations surge

Tesla has been having a strong year the Chinese market through the first seven months of 2024, driven by the strong performance of the Model Y. While worldwide sales have been dipping, that doesn’t appear to be the case in China as the number of vehicle registrations continues to grow.

Model Y Dominates BEV Sales

The Tesla Model Y continues to lead the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment in China, ranking first in wholesale sales from January to July 2024. During this period, the Model Y recorded 298,384 units in wholesale sales. This was far ahead of its next closest competitor, the BYD Seagull, which recorded 227,293 units sold, according to data from CNEvPost.

Not to be outdone, the Tesla Model 3 also performed well, ranking third in BEV wholesale sales from January to July 2024 with 202,356 units.

Vehicle Registrations

In addition to wholesale sales through July, Tesla’s vehicle registrations in China indicate continuing momentum. Between August 5 and August 11, Tesla China registered 15,500 new vehicles. Not only was this a 24% week-over-week improvement, it was also the best week for Tesla in the third quarter, and the third best week of the year for the automaker.

As we have previously reported, Tesla China sold 74,117 vehicles in July 2024, up 47.11 percent from the 31,423 units sold during the same month last year. Of those, 46,227 were sold domestically within China, and 27,890 units exported to other markets around the world.
