Kentucky City Adds Seven Tesla Model Y Patrol Cars to Cut Fuel and Maintenance Costs

Covington Launches EV Pilot Program

The city of Covington, Kentucky, has become the latest to deploy Teslas for law enforcement purposes. Seven Model Ys will join its fleet of police cars as part of a larger EV pilot program.

Covington will slash its carbon footprint by swapping out gas-powered vehicles for EVs. In addition to the Tesla Model Y Premium AWDs, the police department will also deploy a pair of 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE Sedans.

The pilot program will serve as a real-life performance and reliability test for operating an electric fleet. The Model Y patrol cars will be upfitted with the required police equipment by Unplugged Performance and their UP.FIT division.

Other departments are also getting on the EV train. The Fire Department will take delivery of two Chevy Silverado EV pickup trucks, while the Code Enforcement Division will take control of four Chevy Equinox EV SUVs.

According to research sponsored by Covington, switching to electric vehicles will save the city about $23,000 in fuel and maintenance costs in a year. The authorities expect to save close to $123,000 over eight years.

Covington is preparing for an electric future. The city has installed charging stations at multiple locations, and is formalizing plans for more installations.

Tesla is often the first choice for police departments deploying electric cars. Earlier this year, a Texas police department rolled out two Model Ys for patrol. Last year in Missouri, Carl Junction’s Police Department added Model Ys to its own fleet. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) chose Cybertrucks fitted by UP.FIT for patrol duties.
