Tesla has announced that employee Cybercab rides at Giga Texas will begin “soon.” The company announced the news in a post on X, reposting it after deleting an earlier version due to what appeared to be a copyright issue, along with a video showing steering wheel- and pedal-less Cybercabs driving around the Giga Texas campus.
While the announcement marks another milestone for the Cybercab program, it also highlights the gap between Tesla’s manufacturing progress and the maturity of its unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, a gap that could determine how soon Cybercabs move beyond Tesla’s factory complex.

Cybercab production began in April, and in the roughly three months since, Tesla has built hundreds of the purpose-built robotaxis. Many have already been shipped to locations across the U.S., but for now they remain parked, waiting for the software to catch up.
But building the vehicles is only half the challenge. Deploying them without a steering wheel or pedals depends entirely on the progress of Tesla’s unsupervised FSD software.
As we noted when production first began, the hardware was ready, but the bigger question was whether Tesla’s unsupervised FSD software would be ready in time.
While Tesla has successfully removed safety monitors from Model Y Robotaxis operating in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, the service is still limited in both scale and operating area. Moving from autonomous Model Ys to Cybercabs without steering wheels or pedals is another significant step, and one that appears to require additional validation.
That’s where the new employee ride program comes in. By beginning Cybercab rides on the controlled roads around Giga Texas, Tesla can continue validating the system and collecting real-world data before exposing the vehicle to the far less predictable conditions found on public streets.
However, the fact that Cybercab rides are only now beginning in such a controlled environment suggests there is still work to do before Tesla is ready to deploy the vehicle on public roads at scale.
