Rivian R2 specs leak ahead of official unveil: $47K starting price, 330 mile range

Rivian is gearing up to take the covers off the R2, their next-generation electric vehicle (EV), in just a few days in Laguna Beach, California. While the company has been releasing a few glimpses of the R2 in the days leading up to the official unveiling, like the image above, they appear to have accidentally leaked the specs for the EV on their website.

Rivian has been teasing the R2 for over a year now, with the R2 platform expected to underpin a new range of smaller and more affordable electric vehicles (EVs). The R2 will be be built at Rivian’s new factory in Georgia, which is currently under construction, putting a potential launch date in 2026.

With just a few days to go until the official unveiling and the start of pre-orders, the company has done a great job preventing any leaks from employees, but now they appear to have leaked many of the important specs themselves through a blunder on their website, and it looks like it will be a compelling choice in the EV marketplace.

According to bits of information in the source code of the recently added R2 page on Rivian’s website uncovered by X user Chris Hilbert (@Hilbe), the new EV will have a starting price of US$47,000, hitting the lower range of their price target of between US$40,000 and US$60,000. The code also revealed it will seat five, have a range up to 330 miles (531km) and be able to go from 0 to 60mph in 3 seconds.

Also included in the leak is that the R2 will feature both North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) charge ports, as well as some key dimensions of the EV.

  • Length 185.6 in
  • Width 75 in
  • Width with Mirrors 84.4 in
  • Height 66.9 in
  • Max Ground Clearance 9.8 in
  • Wheelbase 15.6 in
  • Wheel and Tire Diameter 32
  • Approach Angle 25°
  • Departure Angle 27°

The code confirmed the R2 will have one of the most sought-after features in an EV, a front trunk, or frunk. It also talked about some accessories for the R2, like a bike mount that “snaps into the rear accessory ports so you can take bikes to go.” There is also mention of “powered rear glass,” suggesting the back window will roll down into the tailgate.

Once word about the leak spread on social media, Rivian was quick to update their website to remove any mention of the specs for the R2. But as the famous saying goes, the internet is forever.

We don’t have to wait long to find out all of the official details and specs of the R2. Rivian will livestream the official unveiling on March 7, 2024 from Laguna Beach, California, on X.
